There’s a word that we don’t like very much at Texas811, and it really bites into our mission of underground damage prevention and workplace safety.
It’s the word “can’t.”
I can’t call 811, I don’t have time to wait for a utility locator.
I can’t call 811, it’s not my job.
I can’t call 811, I’m too busy for utility marking.
I can’t call 811, I left my phone at home.
I can’t call 811, it would waste time because I already know where the line is buried.
I can’t call 811, this is too simple a job.
I can’t call 811, this is an emergency.
I can’t call 811, it costs too much.
I can’t call 811, I don’t know the number. (Seriously, I heard this once.)
To all of these “I can’t” statements, I only have two words to say: you can. There is NO EXCUSE for not calling 811 prior to a dig – to any dig.
The call to 811 is ALWAYS free. The subsequent locating of underground utilities is also ALWAYS free.
Did you know that calling 811 to get underground utilities located before a dig reduces the risk of damage to less than one percent?
Did you know that an underground utility is struck every six minutes nationally because someone didn’t call 811 to get utility locates done first?
Don’t be a “can’t” – it’s not healthy for you, surrounding property, or the environment.
Take the “can” attitude and make the call to 811.
Until next week, safe digging!
