There was an obituary in the paper the other day about a man you’ve probably never heard of, but you’re certainly familiar with his legacy.
Bruce Halle died at the age of 87. He was the founder of the national Discount Tire chain.
Mr. Halle began his dream in 1960, just four years after he graduated from college. He rented an old plumbing supply company storefront, built his own countertops and repainted the sign outside. As his only employee, he was salesman, tire technician, accountant and cleaning crew.
It was three lonely days before a customer straggled in, and it was a week before he made a sale. That first purchaser didn’t have much to choose from – the entire inventory consisted of two new tires and four retreads!
Fast forward to 2017, and Forbes Magazine estimated his net worth to be more than $5 billion.
Truly a rags-to-riches story.
At Texas811 we can appreciate his story. We began life on January 9, 1984 as Texas Excavation Safety System. Our purpose?
- Minimize the risk of death, injury and damage; loss or curtailment of services vital to public health and safety; and damage to underground facilities.
- Give notice to members of the Corporation of proposed excavation before such excavation actually commences, and
- Furnish to requesting parties information about the members who have underground facilities in the vicinity of the scheduled excavation.
Four years later we had about 45 members and were doing a whopping 12 thousand plus incoming locate request calls PER YEAR!!!!
As we cruise into 2018, we’re looking back on about three million incoming locate request calls in 2017 and over 1700 members – and the tread on our tires hasn’t worn a bit!
Texas Excavation Safety System became Texas811, coinciding with the national move toward the call 811 number for location requests, though many people still refer to us as TESS. In fact, the old number – 1-800-DIG-TESS – is still functioning, as well as the 811 number.
And, oh yes, our purpose remains the same as it was back in January of 1984. And yes, we’re much more than pipeline safety. We’re telecommunications safety, electrical safety, water safety, sewer safety – any utility that’s buried underground. We’re damage prevention, plain and simple.
Which is ok with us. As long as you call before you dig, we’re happy. And you’ll be happy, too, when you know what’s below.
Until next time, safe digging!
