Would you like to ride in my beautiful balloon?
Would you like to glide in my beautiful balloon?
We could float among the stars together, you and I
For we can fly, we can fly
Up, up and away
My beautiful, my beautiful balloon
The name of this song is “Up, Up and Away” written by Jimmy Webb and recorded by the 5th Dimension back in 1967. It reached number 7 on the US pop singles chart, and the album picked up four Grammys, including song of the year.

What, you may ask, does a balloon have to do with 811? Plenty!
At last week’s 10th anniversary Common Ground Alliance event in Orlando, the CGA unveiled the 811 balloon, sponsored by Cox Utilities. From the CGA website:
“The 811 Balloon will travel across the country raising awareness about underground damage prevention. CGA Members will have the opportunity to book the Balloon for an appearance at their event. The 811 Balloon is on a dedicated path and timeline. Although weather will be a contributing factor to its appearances; every effort will be made to accommodate requests.”
The Cox Utilities/CGA balloon follows the heritage of the first hot air balloonists who hailed from France in the 18th century. The first balloon flight with humans aboard, a tethered flight, took place on or around October 15, 1783. The first free flight with human passengers was made a few weeks later, on November 21, 1783.
The CGA balloon is scheduled to be at the Texas811 20th Annual Golf Tournament in Dallas on Friday, April 21st. (If you haven’t already made plans to attend this fun event, here’s the link: www.texas811.org/golf.)
As the nation’s largest 811 call center, Texas811 is proud to be a part of this high-flying adventure.
The next time you’re getting ready to excavate, take the time to look up at the sky first – there may be a beautiful balloon floating there, reminding you to look down at your smart phone and check in with 811 first!
Until next time, safe digging!
