Did anybody notice the sun coming up today? It did, just the way it always does – rising in the east, setting in the west. This, despite the fact that two beloved institutions are calling it quits.
Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, who we’ve written about before in this blog (see “The Winning Call” http://blog.texas811.org/2016/02/08/the-winning-call/) is retiring from professional football. This is something he hinted at after winning the Super Bowl, but was still playing a will he – won’t he game. Apparently the game is now over. After 18 years, two Super Bowl titles, five MVP awards and more passing records than you can shake a stick at, Manning is going out on top. He’ll be 40 years old this month, and the time was right.
The Emmy, Golden Globe and BAFTA (British Academy of Film & Television Arts) award winning series Downton Abbey also decided to call it quits and go out on top after six years of stunning success, during which it became one of the most widely watched television shows in the world. It began its run in the United Kingdom in September of 2010 and concluded in December of 2015; it aired on PBS in the United States from January of 2011 to March of 2016.
So what does all of this mean in the great scheme of things?
Well, you’ll be able to watch Downton Abbey forever in reruns, and I’m relatively certain there may be one or two Peyton Manning highlight reels floating around somewhere. In other words, gone, but certainly not forgotten.
They’ll always be around – just like 811.
Calling 811 before you dig gets those hidden underground lines and cables safely located so you don’t find them by accident, which in every case is a bad thing with only varying degrees of bad involved. No matter where you are reading this blog in the United States, you only have to call 811 to be connected to your nearest one call locate center, where a friendly operator will take your information and pass your dig location on to any relevant utilities in the area of your proposed excavation. Those utilities – or their paid locating services – will then come out and flag or spray paint to show you the location of buried lines.
And it’s all FREE.
811 can’t solve ALL of your problems. But for those that are buried underground, we do a really good job!
Finally, for those of you keeping up – I promised to update my weight loss program right here every week. I started at 219 pounds on January 4. Today’s weight is 211.8. Last week was 211.8. Didn’t gain any, but didn’t lose any, either. Back to the gym!
Until next week, safe digging!
