Don’t blink or you’ll miss it – and…you missed it. The Halloween stuff is gone, and the Christmas items are out. Actually, they’ve been co-existing in stores for several weeks now (though it seems like it’s been since August).
The point is, the seasons come and go – and the older you get, the faster they seem to go. You probably remember as a child, it took FOREVER to get from Halloween to December 25. Now, it feels like it’s about five minutes, with time thrown in for a quick turkey sandwich around the end of November. Some people are even bypassing November all together and going for setting up and decorating their tree right now.
Time just seems to whirl past at a dizzying speed. The 4th of July was only a few weeks ago, and Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. And yet, there’s one thing all of this celebrations have in common: no matter where you are on the calendar, calling 811 before digging is ALWAYS in season.
Spring and summer are, of course, the prime digging seasons. Fall and winter, a bit less so. It doesn’t matter, though, if you are excavating the foundation for a new house, or digging to put in a sprinkler system, or a homeowner setting a mail box or installing a fence. Call 811 first.
You KNOW Christmas is on December 25. You KNOW Independence Day is on July 4. You KNOW Valentine’s Day is on February 14. But you DON’T know where those buried lines or cables are beneath the ground, what direction they’re heading, or even how deep they’re located. Maybe it’s four feet. Maybe it’s four inches. Maybe it’s right beneath your shovel. Maybe it’s three feet away. To paraphrase a famous movie line:
So – whether you are putting up the tree today or tomorrow, or taking down Halloween, or putting out your flags for an early start on the Fourth of July – remember to call 811 before you dig! We want you around for many more holidays to come!
Until next week, safe digging!
