Was your drive in to work a bit slower this morning? Mine was. I go through two school zones on my way to work at Texas811.
Wow, what a hardship. I have to slow from my usual 60 to 20 mph, and can’t text. (if my insurance agent is reading this, just kidding!!!!)
Confession: I was a sixth grade crossing guard at my elementary school. I got to wear a little vest and carry a flag. Back in those days, there was no such thing as lighted flashing crossings, at least not in my town. And adult crossing guards? Forget it.
Basically, you paid your money and you took your chances. Thankfully, times have changed!
But not for everyone.
There are still people out there who pay their money and take their chances. I’m talking about everyone who excavates in Texas without making the free call to 811 first. Unless you’ve got Superman’s x-ray vision, you have NO IDEA what’s under your feet. Did you know that the Common Ground Alliance figures that there are more than 100 BILLION feet of underground utilities in the United States? That’s more than a football field in length of buried utilities for every man, woman and child in our nation.
If you’ve never been lucky at a scratch off lottery game or at picking the office pool NCAA championship, there are really good odds you’ll be lucky at striking a buried utility of some kind if you dig without calling 811 first. The one free call gets any utilities in the vicinity of your dig area marked and located BEFORE you break ground – and the locating service is free, too!
So – don’t gamble by speeding through a school zone, and don’t gamble by NOT calling 811. In either case, the odds are against you.
If you have kids in school, everyone at Texas811 hopes they have a great year!
