According to the Dallas Morning News, that statistic reflects a 30 percent jump since the last federal estimate, and it affects nearly 1.2 million US children and teens. Autism is diagnosed empirically, usually by age eight, meaning that doctors make judgments based upon observing a patient’s behavior.
